Does Zed AI (Free / Pro / Business) train on your code?

Zed Industries · Free / Pro / Business · checked 2026-10-19

Doesn't keep your code, training is opt-in, and it runs on local models. Kill telemetry and it's near-perfect.

Trains on code

Opt-in

Default

Zed doesn't retain prompts or code context by default; Edit Prediction training data is collected only if you opt in, the project is open source, and the file isn't excluded.

How to opt out

Nothing to do. Don't opt into Edit Prediction training data or send feedback ratings. Business admins can block sharing org-wide.

Retention

None by default. Zed-hosted models: providers bound to no-training + ZDR, except designated models (e.g. Claude Fable 5/5.1: Anthropic keeps 30+ days for safety).

Telemetry

Client-side usage metrics and crash reports (no code); server-side metadata for billing/rate limits when using hosted AI.

Disable telemetry

settings.json: "telemetry": { "diagnostics": false, "metrics": false }

Zero data retention

yes · Default for Zed-hosted models except provider-designated safety-retention models.

Offline / local model

yes · Point Zed AI features at Ollama, LM Studio, llama.cpp or any local OpenAI-compatible server; local edit-prediction providers supported.

Self-hostable

partial · Self-hosted model endpoints supported; the editor is local.
